UDP leader Ousainou Darboe arrives at the rally in Serrekunda, Oct 24, 2009

The leader of the United Democratic Party, Ousainou Darboe, has called on Gambians to replicate the struggle that led to the defeat of Apartheid in South Africa in the Gambia.

In his address to party supporters in Serrekunda on October 24, 2009, Mr Darboe said his political party will continue to hold rallies across the country with or without permits. He said the UDP would beg neither the police nor the military their rights to hold meetings.

Mr Darboe also cautioned the Gambian president to stop blaming diaspora Gambians for his regime's tarnished image. He said those tarnishing the country's image are the very people president Jammeh surrounds himself with.

The opposition leader also blamed the exodus of the country's youth population to western countries on lack of employment opportunities in the country.

The UDP leader also decried the usurpation farmland and businesses in the country by president Yahya Jammeh, who continues to use extorted labor force on his numerous farms around the country. Mr Darboe and many political observers described this as modern day slavery. Darboe alleged that all farm managers at the president's farms are military officers.

Mr Darboe's campaign manager, Femi Peters, was however arrested on October 25, 2009, and charged with organizing unlawful assembly and in possession of an unauthorized public address system.

Mr Peters denied breaking any law, and Ousainou Darboe as an attorney defending Peters, has so far put up a strong defense which is likely drawing prosecutors into a serious prosecutorial mess.
