A well known businessman Momodou Tunkara is reported to have been hacked to death by armed robbers in the early hours of Wednesday, May 12, 2010.
The attempted robbery which turned deadly, occured in Farafenni, North Bank Region, our reporter says. The unknown assailants allegedly ambushed Mr Tunkara on his way home from the early morning prayers (Fajr) at a nearby mosque.
Mr Tunkara was a native of Sanjali Sarakunda but was operating his businesses from the regional commercial city of Farafenni, and regularly supplied different commodities to the suburban villages and cities.
Residents who spoke with our reporter said the robbers may have suspected that Tunkara was going out on his daily business transactions and thought he had some money on him. The victim is reported have been hit with blunt objects on his head and the attackers gouged his eyes.
It is however not clear whether the robbers made away with any money.
The residents told Senegambia News Mr Tunkara was found dead by passersby coming from the early morning prayers from the same mosque. The residents said they did not hear any noise or a shout for help.
The incident was later reported to Farafenni police and the body of Mr Tunkara was taken to Farafenni hospital and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul for a postmortem. Tunkara is survived by wives, several children and grandchildren.
