Police in Gambia have arrested and detained a senior official at the justice department last Tuesday for alleged complicity in misuse of public funds amounting to D4 million. Two high Court judges have also been dismissed in connection with the embezzlement.
Judicial secretary Haruna Jaiteh was arrested by police on Tuesday while in office at the ministry of justice in Banjul, sources close to the police department said. He has since been in detention without charges contrary to the constitutional limit of 72 hours.
Two high Court Justices have also been dismissed for their alleged involvement in the misuse of public funds. They are Justices Nguie Mboob-Janneh and Amina Saho-Ceesay.
High Court sources said the two had their official vehicles repossessed, and are likely to be charged with corruption.
Another judge, Justice Safie Njie was also reported sacked for the same reason, but that is yet to be independently confirmed.
In a separate incident, Captain Saine who is believed to be one of the notorious interrogators at NIA, has been transferred to the police headquaters.
