Femi Peters, UDP campaign manager arrested on Sunday

Gambian police have arrested the campaign manager of the country's main opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), US-based party members said on Sunday.

Campaign manager Femi Peters was picked up on Sunday by members of the Police Intervention Unit barely a day after his party defiantly held a political rally in the nation's largest city, Serrekunda.

The UDP held the rally in defiance after police had turned down their request for a permit on Saturday, October 24, but the police intervention unit showed up just before the rally ended and questioned Mr Peters, who allegedly referred them to their superiors for clarifications.

No charges have yet been pressed against Peters, and the UDP is expected to hold a press conference on Monday.

In another development, the Commissioner of police in Kanifing, Samba Kebbeh who was sacked earlier this month was arrested on Monday, October 19 at his home in Abuko. He is currently being detained at Mile II State Central Prison.

And as usual, authorities have failed to advance any reason for his dismissal and arrest.
