The Gambian Association of Minnesota would like to take this opportunity to announce the shipment of a 40-foot container of 35,000 textbooks consisting of 20 Pallets (589 boxes) to The Gambia. The container left on the 27th of May 2009, and is expected in Banjul by the end of July. This came as a result of long and tireless efforts and collaboration between the Gambian Association of Minnesota and our donor partners-Books For Africa, and Money Gram International.
Books are donated by Books For Africa, a U.S-based NGO dedicated to helping end the book famine in Africa. The shipped books include new and previously owned donated by individuals, schools and organizations. The value of container by conservative Internal Revenue Services (IRS) estimate exceeds $165,000 or 4 million Dalasis. The books range from Grade five all the way to college and university level in subject ranging from Maths, English Literature, English Communication, Science, Social Studies, Medical and health, Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Psychology ,Oncology and some school supplies. The books will be donated to identified schools throughout the country. Handing over ceremony of the books to the various recipients will be scheduled sometime in early August in The Gambia and will be attended by representatives of the executive committee of the Gambian Association of Minnesota.
The Executive committee on behalf of the Gambian community in Minnesota would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to Books For Africa management for accepting our proposal, Money Gram International for donating $10,000 to cover the shipment and handling costs and our wonderful supportive Gambian community without whose untiring efforts this would not have happened.
The Gambian Community in the state of Minnesota is small but very vibrant and dedicated Gambians who are always willing to give back to the community and to their homeland. This is our first major project giving back to The Gambia with more to follow, God willing. Special thanks to our partners in the Gambia especially the office of Permanent Secretary for Education for their continued support and collaboration in this project.
